Alan Sockloff: Photographer
Uncle David's (& Bruce's) Scrapyard
Gallery I
Beginning in 1997, David and Bruce Richman kindly allowed
me to photograph their scrap yard (S.D. Richman Sons, in
Philadelphia). After scouting around, I began to
appreciate the abstract forms created by piles of small
metal pieces of mostly identical shape and composition
(bushelings) and crushed bales of similar composition but
different shape.
Consistent with my belief that much of what happens in
nature results from random processes, rather than any
pre-determined schema, the scrap pictures represent
images of the results of these random processes. In
these images, lines, curves and shapes are embellished by
texture and shading. To add to the allure, quasi-magical
forms are sometimes created; these forms may be partially
recognizable, although not always obvious.
