    Coastal Maine Gallery I

For the last decade or so, I have been drawn to the coastal region of Maine, revisiting locations from Eastport to the Bath/Brunswick area. In Maine, I see life at a simple, unpretentious level, relatively unaffected by the nearby civilization to the south. I see man's attempt to survive and eke out a living amidst the complex interplay of the elements - land, sea, and weather.

Just as landscapes are filled with marvelous rock formations and pine trees, seascapes are dotted with numerous indications of man's presence - docks and harbors, lighthouses, working boats, and little dinghies. The scenes I photograph are either purely natural or suggestive of the presence of man. The bulk of this ongoing photographic series suggests man's presence: his structures, his boats, and even his chairs and his junk. In these scenes, weather isn't always accommodating, and life is sometimes stripped to the very simple, with little room for frills.
